The Striver's Guide to Ordering Wine Like a Pro Part I
Written by April Joy and Meghan Pino

Ordering fruity margaritas and apple martinis should be reserved for girl's night out from now on chicas. When it comes to dinner dates, after work get togethers, and intimate evenings at home, it's time to for you to upgrade your taste buds. A glass of wine is officially the new cosmopolitan. What was once an expensive hobby is now becoming more of a modern day complement to many meals. Wine is the perfect choice in most situations, but choosing a wine can be daunting. For beginners, learning about the various types of wine can be an incredibly delicious experience, yet also frightening. But just like learning to appreciate good coffee or a fine dark chocolate, it simply takes time and practice. You don't have to pop expensive bottles like the rich and famous in order to enjoy. For around $6 you can have the perfect glass of wine with your entrée. This of course, is depending on the type of wine and the venue.

Cliff from Acker Merrall & Condit, New York City, the oldest wine store in the country (160 West 72nd St.) suggests going to a restaurant that specializes in fine food and wine. "Ask your server to help you. You can point out things on the menu that appeal to you, and based on your taste preferences, your server should be able to suggest a wine to you."

WINE PAIRING
The most imperative part of the wine tasting experience is pairing the perfect glass of wine with the appropriate meal. A general rule of thumb when dining is to go from white to red wine. For the most part, the color of the wine goes with meat of the same color; white wines with white meats; red wines with red meat. Use the Jorden Striver's Guide to help in your wine pairing process.
